Arm Chair

Based on several examples from Philadelphia, this arm chair was built in the classic Queen Anne style with a curved and shaped back, hand shaped cabriole legs and arms, and a sculptured crest rail. The use of a very traditional chair joint - the wedged through mortise and tenon - where the side seat rail joins the rear legs allows for the construction of this chair without the lower stretcher assembly often seen in New England chairs.  This type of construction was typical in Philadelphia during the early 18th century and represented one of the pinnacles of chair construction techniques.  This chair is shown in solid cherry with a natural finish and a leather covered slip seat.

Features

• Solid cherry construction - many other woods available including mahogany, tiger maple and walnut. • Hand shaped legs, back and crest rail. • Curved front rail carries leg curve across front of chair. • The side rails connect to the rear legs with the traditional Philadelphia trademark joint -a wedged through mortise and tenon. • Pinned mortise and tenon joinery used throughout. • The chair back is shaped to provide comfortable support for extended sitting. • Hand turned stretcher at the base of the rear legs • Slip seat design - seat is upholstered in a traditional manner with webbing, padding and muslin - seats will be covered with customer's choice of fabric if provided. • Chair shown with natural finish - staining is available - finished with wiping varnish • Hand rubbed and waxed to a satiny sheen. • Several options available to make the chair slightly more formal - these include: bead details on the seat and back rails, chamfers on the lower sections of the rear legs and carving including shells or various feet.
